Project Description
Art Vandelay Painting recently completed an exterior painting project in the upscale Huntington subdivision of Shavano Park, San Antonio.
This project involved the restoration and repainting of a wrought iron fence that had endured years of sun, water exposure, and rust. Using a meticulous process and premium products, we brought the fence back to life, leaving it with a durable, sleek finish in Tricorn Black (Semi-Gloss).
This three-day project showcased our expertise in restoring weathered metal surfaces, turning a faded fence into a stunning feature that enhances the home’s curb appeal.
Project Details:
Here’s what made this project a success:
The Fence’s Condition Before Painting:
- Faded and discolored paint due to constant exposure to sun and rain.
- Rust buildup, particularly at the joints, compromising both appearance and integrity.
Products Used:
- Ready-Strip Rust Remover: To eliminate rust at joints and ensure a clean surface.
Sherwin-Williams Direct-to-Metal (DTM) Paint:
- Color: Tricorn Black.
- Sheen: Semi-Gloss for a smooth, polished finish that enhances durability.
Our Step-by-Step Process:
We follow a comprehensive approach to ensure long-lasting and flawless results:
1. Preparation:
Pressure Washing
- Removed dirt, grime, and loose paint to expose the true condition of the metal.
Sanding
- Hand-sanded every inch of the fence to smooth the surface and prepare it for paint adhesion.
- Focused extra effort on rusted areas.
Surface Protection
- Carefully covered surrounding areas with paper, plastic, and tape to prevent overspray.
- Consulted neighbors and wrapped nearby vehicles in clear plastic (with permission) for added professionalism and precaution.
2. Rust Treatment:
- Applied Ready-Strip Rust Remover to affected areas.
- Ensured all rust was thoroughly removed to prevent future issues.
3. Painting Application:
- First Coat: Applied the first layer of Direct-to-Metal (DTM) paint using a sprayer for a smooth and even finish.
- Second Coat: Added a second layer to enhance durability and ensure full coverage.
4. Final Touches:
- Conducted a thorough inspection to guarantee every inch of the fence met our quality standards.
- Cleaned up the site to leave no trace of the project except the stunning, refreshed fence.
Results:
When the Carter family approached us for this project, they already had high expectations. They had seen our work on their neighbor’s fence and wanted the same level of professionalism and excellence.
The Carters’ wrought iron fence was in rough shape, with patches of rust and faded paint diminishing the home’s exterior appeal. From the moment we arrived, we knew this project was about more than just painting—it was about restoring the elegance of their property.
On the first day, as we prepped the site, Brandon Carter came out to check on our progress. He was impressed with how carefully we protected the surrounding areas, even wrapping his vehicle in plastic to ensure no overspray would reach it. By the second day, the rust was gone, and the first coat of Tricorn Black brought new life to the fence.
When we finished the project on the third day, the Carters were thrilled. Sherri remarked how the semi-gloss sheen perfectly complemented their home’s modern aesthetic. Though we’re still awaiting their 5-star review, their smiles and gratitude made it clear they were delighted with the result.
